Cruising the Waterways: Spontaneous Moments and Cultural Experiences

Cruising the Waterways: Spontaneous Moments and Cultural Experiences

For the uninitiated, the idea of a barge holiday may seem like an odd way to see a country. However, ask anyone who has travelled the waterways of Europe and they will explain with gusto the beauty of cruising through foreign landscapes, tasting gourmet food and wine and learning about local culture and customs.
A barge holiday offers an intimate and immersive way to explore a new place. Not only will you get a novel perspective of the landscape from your position on the water, you will gain inimitable insights from experiences catered to your own tastes and interests.

Spontaneous Moments

Though a barge holiday with European Waterways is always meticulously planned, the gentle rhythm of travel allows plenty of time to become acquainted with some of the more unusual aspects of a country or region. Of course, we enjoy showing guests iconic architecture and famous landmarks, we know that they equally appreciate unplanned, authentic moments where they can truly connect to people and places.

This is what we call an ‘insider experience’: an experience possibly unique to the small group of people travelling on your hotel barge creating a memory you will cherish forever.

We love spontaneous moments in which our guests can form relationships with people they meet along the journey. For example, one memorable afternoon our guests were treated to a private tour of a Burgundian lock-keeper’s immaculate garden and cottage before being asked to share a glass of Pastis. They bravely joined him in a game of boules and though our guests played valiantly they were thoroughly beaten by the locals! In the past, our holiday-makers have received a tour of the beautifully tended grounds of a Scottish castle and given a knowledgeable talk by the head gardener.

As many of our guests are wine connoisseurs, we often seek out interesting wine-related adventures. One fortunate group were shown round a beautiful Renaissance castle by the owner himself. The count then took his fascinated visitors down into his excellent wine cellar – we were all very envious! There is also a certain wooden boat on the River Loire well-known to our guests. The hospitable owner is very happy to share a carafe of crisp white wine with his passengers.

Cultural Experiences

We try and lead our guests away from the typical tourist haunts and introduce them to locals whenever possible. From master clockmakers in Holland to builders in a Thames-side boatyard, these craftsmen always have stories to tell and are a fantastic way to tap into the rich history of the waterways. We encourage an appreciation of traditional values and skills – whether the job is the manoeuvring of delicate cogwheels or the creation of an entire vessel, you’ll be impressed! Meeting and learning from locals is one of the best ways to gain a comprehensive cultural knowledge of a region that a guide book just couldn’t deliver.

If you crave a real understanding of the places you visit then maybe a barge holiday is just what you’re looking for.

Save Time and Money with Shipping Insurance

Save Time and Money with Shipping Insurance

In some industries, you are required to send many packages by mail. Maybe you have several factories that specialize in different parts of the same product before it’s done, or maybe you have some clients who prefer to ship their items right from your office. Whatever the case, it often makes sense for a business to run an insurance delivery account when they will be using a regular delivery service.

Save Time and Money with Shipping Insurance

The main benefit of having an account for PIC insurance is you do not have to worry about having to think about whether every package needs to have shipping insurance before you ship it. In any business, time is just as important as money, and in some cases time can be even more important. Every second you spend thinking about whether this package requires insurance or filling out the necessary documents is the time that you can spend on other aspects of your business.

Seperek here or there may seem unimportant, but when added together, the price can be very expensive. For example, you have to fill an order that requires 50 packets, and you must fill out a document to get shipping insurance for each package. If each form takes 30 seconds to fill in, you’ve spent almost half an extra hour fully packing your packets. Do it twice a week for a year, and you’ll spend a full working week at no cost except shipping. Efficiency is one of the key to making money for a business while wasting time just the opposite.

Not having an account can also be expensive in terms of lost money because it does not take advantage of discounts. When you send multiple packages at once, you can often get a price break for a larger amount. This can be valuable, because every dollar saved is a dollar then you can reinvest it into your business. It’s much easier to grow a business when you can allocate other resources to hire more qualified people. Save Time and Money with Shipping Insurance

Choosing an account for PIC insurance is a great way to get your business in a prime position to deliver the goods to where you need them, while ensuring your reputation stays intact with the items you send. If you are looking for ways to move your business forward, this can be a great start to doing.

Welcome to Fall

Welcome to Fall

I have just spent a week in the White Mountains of New Hampshire. The foliage was just starting to turn into a wonderful koliascope of colors. Unseasonably warm then while there, we are now getting back to the usual temperatures of October. The gardens are wilting down, the skins on the tomatoes are thicker, canning and freezing are in full operation. Corn stalks are turning brown in the fields, and as the leaves die back, acres of bright orange pumpkins are evident against the backdrop of browning leaves. Sumacs along the edge of the swamps are bright red and are probably the earliest of the changing season.
The tree leaves, although still changing color here, are starting to drop. They go in stages. Most noticeable are the maples as they seem to go overnight. The oaks, that are most abundant in this area, go more slowly. Many do not lose all of their leaves over the fall but wait for spring and new growth. All I really know is that by Thanksgiving I will be knee deep in leaves and thanking God for leaf blowers.

Right now the houses on the street are slowly starting to sport scarecrows, orange lights, pumpkins, and corn stalks. Soon the neighborhood children will be buying and making costumes for trick-or-treating. I’m stocking up on candy bars as there will be about one hundred little ones knocking at my door. Some not so little ones, too. I chuckle at the less than one-year-olds that come in their parents’ arms, knowing full well that these babe-in-arms will get none of the bounties.

It is a wonderful time of year. With a chill in the air, it is a great time for walking and hiking. Despite a year with a heavy infestation of gypsy moths, the oak trees have put out an abundance of acorns. That means that with this bounty the squirrels will have been just as busy reproducing large litters. That may mean a problem for next year. If the season does not provide for the newcomers, then the population of squirrels will dwindle again. They come and go from year to year.

It’s the time of year that I start looking towards my own Halloween decorating. I don’t do a lot, but do enjoy carving pumpkins. Choosing from a collection of patterns that were collected over the years, I pick them based on available time and the effort required to do the work. There is a ghost that hangs from a tree to welcome the kids with a cackle. Using white paper bags and black silhouettes, luminaria lines the walk up to the front door. The advent of flickering battery operated lights take away the danger of flames in the pumpkins and luminaria. Other smaller lights and decorations are brought out of storage. The costume for the dog involves a bandana and motorcycle hat. My own costume comes from a collection in that same storage area and varies from year to year. With a motorcycle dog, then a motorcycle Mama may end up being the choice.

Not a big fan of roasted pumpkin seeds, when the guts are pulled from the pumpkins, I put the collection in a large shallow roasting pan. This pan is placed on a storage box on the deck just outside of the living room window. From my recliner, I am privy to a private show of the squirrels coming up to feed on them. It keeps them out of the bird feeders. The biggest male always stakes his claim on the pan of seeds, chasing away all others. Somehow that just doesn’t seem fair.

Four Main Advantages of Opening Your Own Vape Store

Four Main Advantages of Opening Your Own Vape Store

If you’ve been looking for an opportunity to start a business, consider whether a vape store might be a good fit for your area. Here are some advantages of starting this kind of business. Four Main Advantages of Opening Your Own Vape Store
Developing Sources of Income

Like any other small business, profit potential is a major incentive. Before making a major investment, make sure that you have done your homework. Perform a thorough analysis of the size of your community and other factors that may affect the demand. Is there a store type already in your community? It can be very difficult to compete with other vape stores in the same neighborhood, but a big city can easily support more than one store.

Bring Something New to Your Community

If there is no competition in the immediate area, then opening this type of business brings something new to your community. The gas station may have little choice of cigarettes or electronic vaporizer, but the right vape store provides a wider range of products and expertise. More conventional businesses (such as chain restaurants) can be a safer investment, but also more local competition.

In an age of online retailing, it is important to make your brick and mortar location appealing to consumers. You may not be able to beat online prices, so it’s important to offer friendly services and advice as needed. People interested in custom mods will have places to visit and learn more.

Give a Healthier Alternative

Liquor stores and other types of retailers are not always welcome in conservative and religious communities. A vape shop, on the other hand, can be said to be a more positive and healthy alternative to lethal addictions such as smoking. When compared with other illnesses such as tobacco and alcohol, vaporizers have minimal impact on the health of casual users. When a new medical prescription is passed in a particular state, it can open up new markets for enterprising shopkeepers.

Enjoy your Passion

With a niche business, it is important that you (or your employees behind the desk) have a passion for vaping. With a tremendous array of e-liquid flavors and so many combinations of specialized equipment available, customers will expect you to have a basic understanding and appreciation of the choices that exist, even if your personal preference is one-way or another. Owners or cashiers who do not care about the product may be less trusted by the customer. Disappointed customers may look for online retailers or other competitors who will offer advice and be behind the quality of their products.

In the end, considerations should be considered before starting any type of store. In addition to securing locations and paying for licenses, this type of business requires a substantial investment in inventory. A thorough analysis of local markets and competition is a good place to start. When a good choice leads to a successful investment, you can see your biggest financial fear rising in smoke. Artist Brain Explained by Science

Artist Brain Explained by Science

We always know a slightly different artist.

They think, speak, and work differently from all of us. Most of them even dress differently.

It is not surprising that recent scientific studies show that the brains of artists differed specifically from other populations.

Dr. Rebecca Chamberlain from the University of KU Leuven in Belgium has noticed that most visual artists describe “seeing” their work in their heads before they put pen to paper or brush onto canvas.

He suspects there is a fundamental difference in the brains of the artists. So he did what a self-respecting scientist would do: he led an experiment to find out.

In the study, researchers have 21 art students and 23 non-artists complete a number of tasks. During each task, they scan their brains through a process called voxel-based morphometry.

Voxel-based morphometry is a neuroimaging technique that allows scientists to identify differences in brain structure among individuals. Artist Brain Explained by Science

And through this experiment, Dr. Chamberlain made several important discoveries.

Structural changes
Brain scans show that the brains of the artists have some distinctive differences.

In particular, they have more gray matter in the parietal lobes. Particularly in structures called precuneus.

The parietal lobes process information from the senses. This area is responsible for our visual and spatial reasoning.

According to research, individuals with more advanced visual reasoning are better at making images in their heads.

This shows that before painters even put their black velvet brush into paint, their painting is already in the parietal lobes. This inner picture guides the artist in ways that nonartists can not imitate.

Nature or parenting?
This finding raises important questions. Are artists better drawing because they have an enlarged precuneus? Or do their precuneus increase in size after years of practice?

Certainly, our habits can change our brain structure from time to time. Just like with our muscles, our brain changes with exercise.

Dr. Chamberlain stated, “This is in line with evidence that focus of expertise really changes the brain.” The brain is very flexible in responding to training and there are huge individual differences that we just started entering. ”

But is it possible that artists have enlarged parietal lobes before they start sharpening their skills? Do certain people by nature tend to be artists?

Determining this will require longer research with larger sample sizes.

Scientists need to study the subject before they start practicing their artistic skills. The study will then follow them through all of their training, comparing their brain structure changes with non-artists.

Such studies will take decades and are unlikely to attract much interest in the way they are funded.

Right side myth
For a long time, a general understanding of the structure of the brain is that the left hemisphere is more analytical and the right side more creative. Therefore, a more creative person has a more dominant right hemisphere.

However, according to this study, artists have improved the gray matter on both sides of their brains. This is an important blow to the myth of right-brain dominance.
