The Anatomy of an Archipelago

The Anatomy of an Archipelago

For anyone with an interest in natural history, the group of islands collectively known as the Galapagos Archipelago is one of the most fascinating places on the planet. The region is renowned for its unique wildlife and the vital role it played in naturalist Charles Darwin’s research, from which he developed his revolutionary Theory of Evolution.
While the majority of visitors on guided Galapagos holidays arrive to experience a close encounter with the iconic wildlife, learning a little of the area’s geologic history can enrich the experience even beyond expectation.

The Anatomy of an Archipelago

The most common way for an archipelago to form is through constant volcanic activity. (They can also form from continental islands, due to erosion or evaporation of water.) Volcanic archipelagos can form in the ocean and in rivers or lakes as they erupt on beneath the surface of the water. When oceanic, the resulting land masses are known as an “island arc”. In many cases this forms as a result of a “hot spot”, in which parts of the Earth’s crust (tectonic plates) continually shift and create friction.

Where two tectonic plates meet and create a hot spot, magma (red-hot molten rock) can push through the sea floor to create an underwater volcano. As tectonic plates continue to shift over the hot spot, the constant eruptions cause lava to build up and up over millions of years until they emerge from the surface of the ocean to create an island.

In some cases, activity ceases when the tectonic plate eventually moves away from the hot spot. But in others, for example in Hawaii and Japan, the island chains continue to evolve, with many of the volcanoes still active today.

The Geology of Galapagos

The Galapagos Archipelago was formed through the repeated movement of the Nazca tectonic plate over millions of years. As it took place over such a long time period, the eastern islands in the chain are actually millions of years older than some of those in the west. The younger ones, like Isabela and Fernandina, for example, are thought to only be around a few hundred thousand years old, and are still in formation today. Some of the older ones, like San Cristobal and Espanola, may be up to five million years old – still relatively young in the history of the world. With the exception of Isabela (which, as the largest, is made up of six), each island was formed from a single volcano.

Due to their volcanic nature, most of the islands in the chain have a similar conical appearance, but they range from those with very low, gentle slopes to some that soar steeply more than 5,000 feet above sea level. It is this varied of topography that has created the astonishing diversity of habitat that supports the magnificent array of unique wildlife – much of which is endemic.

Discover a Unique Region on Galapagos Holidays

The geology and ecology of this isolated island chain make it one of the most unique places in the world. For those who want to learn more, organised small group Galapagos holidays provide the opportunity to explore this rich, bio-diverse part of the planet in an intimate, educational and truly memorable way.

Can you learn to see creatively

Can you learn to see creatively

Although one can expect from a photographer to have creative eyes from the beginning, this is actually something that can be learned. You may receive many tips during your photo class, but if you feel you still need help in this department, there are a few things you can do. When most people take a camera, they are tempted to photograph the most obvious things around them like pets, family members, perhaps landmarks. A great photographer will always know how to look further than that and capture something original from the frame that would be considered a lot of ordinary people. Can you learn to see creatively
The main problem is that everyone has an initial idea of how things should look and they photographed them appropriately, without actually taking the time to look at something creatively or at least try to see it in a different light. This is why they end up taking the same picture over and over and are just satisfied with the boring frames that do not have anything special. For starters, one suggestion given in many photo classes in Paris is to try to see things from a child’s perspective and use the same innocence to gain different views on things. For example, you can shoot everything from a height of 80cm, like how a small child if they have a camera. This will give you a completely different view of the same thing, which will actually change the way you look at it. Put yourself in the position of a child and think about things that you normally ignore. For example, try to find out what rats see when they look up or even do things you do not need to learn in class like shooting into the sun or jumping when you’re shooting.

Can you learn to see creatively

During the photo class you spend your time studying composition rules and now it’s time to see how many of them you can break and when you can successfully destroy them. Instead of focusing on the main thing of interest, you can try to focus on shyness, shapes or even colors. Seeing creatively means not following a pattern or a guide book, let your imagination run wild and show you things they normally would not see. Of course, the only way in which you can achieve it is by always practicing. Practice with every opportunity you get and learn everything there is to learn from every picture you take. After a while you will soon discover that your entire perspective has changed and you will not have to worry about taking boring pictures. You can focus on the main subject of your photo, decide how you want to highlight it and what you can leave behind. The rest will only come naturally and at the end of everything you will get the perfect picture that will always make you proud.

Courmayeur: the Ski Resort for Gourmands

Courmayeur: the Ski Resort for Gourmands

The Italian ski resort of Courmayeur has a rich tradition of fine-dining and gastronomy. It is a culture which the town is proud to celebrate in events throughout the year, including a range of food festivals highlighting everything from traditional local fare to international haute cuisine.
A Destination for Some of the World’s Top Chefs

It is this history of excellent food which has attracted many of the world’s leading chefs to the resort over the years. Leading names such as Heston Blumenthal, Sat Bains, Claude Bosi, Marcus Wareing and Jason Atherton have all made the journey from Geneva to Courmayeur to create gourmet experiences in the resort.

Blumenthal is so enamoured with the resort and its culinary pedigree that for the last four years he has hosted his own Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience in which he and other leading chefs create a gastronomic mountain treat for a select clientele.

Bookings are now available for the Mountain Gourmet Ski Experience 2018 (20-23 March).

Excellent Restaurants

Alongside the famous names with their Michelin stars are a fantastic range of local restaurants, many of them family-run, which serve excellent local cuisine of an exceptionally high standard.

There are so many that it can be hard to choose which to visit during a short stay, so here are my suggestions for the best places to eat in Courmayeur.

• Hotel Christiania Set in Plan Checrouit, the restaurant at the Hotel Christiania is run by its enthusiastic owners Carlo and Marisa. This is the place to come if you want to enjoy a leisurely lunch of pizza and pasta, done the authentic Italian way. Sit on the sunny terrace and soak up the atmosphere in this excellent eatery.

• Maison Vieille The food in the mountain restaurants of the resort is so good that the authorities have extended the hours of the cable car to midnight so that visitors can enjoy supper under the stars at restaurants like Maison Vieille. Here you will enjoy local meats, pastas and a range of delectable deserts. The wine list here is wonderful, full of local wines that the owners will encourage you to try.

• Chiecco For fine dining on the slopes, check out the traditional wooden chalet just above Plan Checrouit which houses Chiecco. The menu is made up of local produce and includes such mouth-watering treats as wild boar and polenta, ricotta ravioli and excellent ragùs.

• Chateau Branlant Dinner at the Chateau Branlant starts off with an exciting snow mobile ride from the top of the Dolonne or Courmayeur gondolas to the restaurant, with another one back at the end of your night. If this wasn’t reason enough to visit, then the delicious, authentic Italian cuisine should be. My advice is to try the daily specials, which are usually the best thing on what is always an exquisite menu.

Getting There

Foodies will have no trouble getting to the resort thanks to the wide range of flights into Geneva from the UK. The transfer journey from Geneva to Courmayeur takes around an hour and a half.

For an executive transfer from Geneva to Courmayeur, book online with Shuttle Direct before you leave home and one of our drivers will be waiting to meet you when you land.

Auto Insurance and Personal Injury When to Get Legal Help

Auto Insurance and Personal Injury When to Get Legal Help

If you are injured in a car accident as a driver, a pedestrian, a cyclist, or a passenger, you may want to seek the help of a personal injury lawyer in Sarasota. Their legal expertise can protect you from legal action against others and help you receive the financial compensation and medical care you deserve. Most importantly, though, they can help you against an aggressive car insurance company.

Auto Insurance and Personal Injury When to Get Legal Help

So when should a lawyer get involved in your situation? Learn more with this easy-to-use guide.

What are they doing

Personal injury lawyers provide legal services to ordinary people who have been injured in an accident. No matter what the role of a person in an accident, they can be hurt by someone else’s carelessness, deliberate harm, or negligence.

The lawyer can also work as a personal advocate for you in the face of a major auto insurance company, who has dedicated a team of paid attorneys to find loopholes and technical limitations so that people like you do not receive fair compensation.

If you suffer severe injuries, expensive medical bills, lost wages due to inability to work after an accident, or other personal or financial damages after an accident, you deserve compensation, especially if you suffer permanent injuries. However, sometimes car insurance companies refuse to help you. This is when an attorney can help you and fight for your compensation.

Disputed duty Auto Insurance and Personal Injury When to Get Legal Help

One of the most difficult ways a car insurance company can try to avoid mistakes and refuse to compensate you is with disputed accountability. This is a tactic where the insurance company claims that you are wrong because of your own injury. They may try to blame you, accusing you of causing the accident to be financially deliberate, or even claiming that their policyholder is not responsible for the accident. They may even try to blame a third party who is not involved in an insurance claim or write it as pure death on any side.

In this case, personal injury lawyers in Sarasota will use their legal knowledge to prove that the person who caused the accident was guilty and will force their insurance company to compensate for any injuries and other damages. Whether they deny responsibility, try to delay payments to you, or refuse to pay the compensation you deserve, professional legal assistance is your ticket for recovery.

Discover Ireland’s Grand Canal on a Barge Cruise

Discover Ireland’s Grand Canal on a Barge Cruise

For your next holiday, take a barge cruise down the Grand Canal and travel from Dublin to Shannon to discover all Ireland has to offer. You can admire the gorgeous green countryside and delightful little cottages that line the waterway, while diving into its interesting and intricate history as a commercial route which allowed the surrounding towns to prosper.
Length and Route

The Grand Canal in Ireland extends for 117 kilometres. Passing through Leinster, it flows from Ringsend in Dublin to the Shannon Harbour in County Offaly. This is the main route, built to connect the capital city with the country’s midlands. The waterway does also have another run that spreads from Lowtown in Couty Kildare to the River Barrow in Athy. There are also various branches that link up with four other towns, though it’s worth mentioning that your barge cruise will probably stick to the main route.

Along the way, you can enjoy beautiful views of Irish towns and villages with their charming little cottages, while admiring the many bridges that arch over the smooth water. The fauna and flora also remain untouched, with grassy towpaths and side roads lining the waterway and adding to the iconic Irish countryside feel.

History of the Grand Canal

Though the canal was closed to commercial traffic in the mid-twentieth century, it has since been restored to its former glory and regularly welcomes a variety of boats and barge cruises. It still features the original 43 locks, five of which are, from an engineering point of view, particularly interesting as they are double locks. Back in the day, these would have allowed the traffic to move faster as two boats can pass at once and there’s more chance of reaching a lock that’s in your favour. The lock-keepers’ cottages have also been refurbished to celebrate the history of this canal…

Relationship with The Guinness Factory

…And what a history it is! The Grand Canal played a crucial role in the creation and development of the Guinness factory. In 1759, two years after the construction of the canal began, Arthur Guinness founded his famous brewery. Thanks to the waterway, he could transport heavy loads of the raw materials he needed far more cheaply and effectively than by road. It was also an ideal way of exporting his finished product. When you pass through the eighth lock on a barge cruise, keep your eyes peeled for the Guinness filter beds which are still used by Arthur’s company today.

Impact of the Famine

In the first half of the nineteenth century, Ireland’s economy began to fail. As people lost their jobs, the Commission for Public Works set them to work on creating the canal. This was a successful scheme until the potato crops failed and the Great Famine broke out. Work had to be halted as labour became scarce. Eventually, trade and commerce on the canal declined, particularly as the construction of the railroads had just started.

By the 1980s, the Grand Canal had become something of a dumping ground. Thankfully, in 1986 it received a funding injection that sought to rejuvenate the canal and restore it to its former glory. Today boat traffic from barge cruises has increased and thousands are able to enjoy this historic waterway.

Paul Newman is the Marketing and E-Systems Executive for European Waterways, the UK’s most respected provider of all-inclusive, luxury barge cruise itineraries. Part of a team of experienced barging aficionados, Paul is first in line to endorse the perks of a slow-paced barge cruise to anyone looking for a unique holiday experience.

The Best Era for Beginning Piano Lesson

The Best Era for Beginning Piano Lesson

The piano lesson by a Brooklyn instructor proves to enrich some things. Learning piano teaches patience and discipline while improving concentration and coordination. How do you know when your child is ready to learn piano? Here are some indicators.

Flower

You may like music and piano, but if your child does not show interest in him, the lesson will soon become boring. However, all is not lost. Develop love of music in your child. Expose your child to all types of music, from classical to jazz to rock, as one genre can spark an interest in learning to play. Also invest in piano. Let your child play with him. If your child learns that experimenting with sounds is fun, he will be more likely to want to start a lesson.

Hand size The Best Era for Beginning Piano Lesson

If your child’s hand is big enough to touch 5 keys adjacent to all 5 fingers, then he / she deserves to start the lesson. This can happen at age 5, but may be a few years older. Before that, let your child play on the keyboard. Again, cultivate that pleasure in the button will make your child motivated to learn to play.

Reading Music

If your child is learning to play with sheet music, then the proper age to start the lesson is about 7 or 8 when the child can read fluently. However, there is an ear-based learning method, called the Suzuki Method, which is suitable for children as young as 5 or 6.

When Too Late Start? The Best Era for Beginning Piano Lesson

Never! Learning music is like learning a foreign language. While younger students are able to absorb new information such as sponges and learn complex skills easily, older children and even adults have the advantage of being more patient, disciplined, and often more motivated.

Although there are some requirements to start piano lessons, such as hand size and reading ability fluently when learning by book method, the single greatest factor in determining the best age for piano lessons is interest in learning to play. Man vs Wildlife – Creating a Sustainable Society on Galapagos

Man vs Wildlife – Creating a Sustainable Society on Galapagos

The Galapagos Islands are primarily known for their abundance of unique wildlife and as the place in which Charles Darwin’s conducted the research that led to his Theory of Evolution. For those who explore the area on a Galapagos wildlife cruise, a visit to this fragile, fascinating chain of islands is a once-in-a-lifetime experience; but for more than 25,000 people, the archipelago is home.
A Growing Population

Since the 1970s the population has increased greatly, with more than 75% of the current number having migrated from the mainland. Human occupation is restricted to an area that encompasses just 3% of the total land, with the vast majority living in the coastal towns on Santa Cruz, Floreana, San Cristobal and Isabela. A far smaller proportion (around 15%) lives in the more rural areas.

Most of the migration occurred for economic reasons, with a rapidly growing tourism industry and a declining standard of living on the Ecuadorian mainland. Before the implementation of the special immigration protocols in 1998, it was estimated that at the then-current rate, the population of the archipelago could double every decade. Since then, stricter controls have been put in place by the Ecuadorean government, which include a system of Transit Control Cards for all visitors coming into the area on Galapagos wildlife cruise itineraries.

Creating a Sustainable Society

Creating a sustainable society in a conservation area is not without its challenges, but the Conservancy of the islands is dedicated to the ongoing education of residents to “become champions of conservation”. The aim is to encourage locals to look at subsistence through a different lens to that of mainland living. Rather than trying to recreate a lifestyle that relies heavily on imported produce, machinery and techniques that are at odds with the environment, it encourages locals to consider themselves “stewards of the archipelago”, and live within a system more compatible with biodiverse preservation.

Education: the Key to the Future

Along with the Charles Darwin Foundation and the Ministry of Education, the Conservancy is working towards education reform designed to foster a strong sense of values and engagement. Their focus is on demonstrating examples of “best practice” to teachers and administrators first, with a view to transferring this to classrooms.

Sustainable Practices in the Community

Another area in which the Conservancy is active is in increasing the capacity of sustainable agriculture throughout the archipelago, by demonstrating alternative methods of farming and environmental management.

Introduced domestic pets present a grave danger to the local wildlife; the Conservancy’s Humane Pet Management promotes responsible pet ownership and sterilisation in partnership with the Animal Balance organisation.

FUNDAR

The local Foundation for Responsible Alternative Development (FUNDAR) believes the establishment of a strong civil society is imperative to the base of any social change in the archipelago. “Citizens must act together with a common goal in order for change to happen.” While only a very small percentage of locals oppose the concept of sustainable development, in reality not much is understood about what it entails. They say it is an inter-generational process, which involves allowing residents to benefit in the “now”, but in a way that also assures that future generations can benefit too.

The Responsibility of All

While there is still some way to go until the region becomes a truly sustainable society, everybody who visits can do their part to ensure that the values are upheld. For anyone visiting on a Galapagos wildlife cruise, this means respecting the National Park Code of Conduct at all times and not doing anything to upset the balance of the ecosystem.

Steps to Starting the First Vape Shop in Your City

Steps to Starting the First Vape Shop in Your City

Opening a new store is a long process. It is important to make a thorough plan and do all the research necessary to maximize your chances of success
Analysis of local markets.

The first step to start a new business is to analyze the local market. Is there a large enough population to support this niche business? A city of 500 people, for example, may be big enough for its own gas station, but there can not be many specialty stores like vape shops or lingerie boutiques. There is no specific cutoff for minimum population size because there may be other factors that compensate for small population sizes. How many people are smokers interested in trying something like vaping? Is there another local store that has shaded the type of product you want to sell? Steps to Starting the First Vape Shop in Your City

Examining local regulations and zoning restrictions.

Vape shops can be a unique challenge when compared to more conventional business categories. Vices like liquor and tobacco are subject to typical taxes and regulations, but nebulizers and other electronic smoking devices can fall into gray areas with few regulations in most states. Cities also have zoning laws that govern whether certain properties can be used as a business or residence. Such urban planning ensures that businesses are accessible through major roadways, and they help limit traffic through residential environments. Before buying a property, especially if it is vacant land, it is necessary to see the applicable zoning regulations.

Assess the amount of start-up capital available.

After buying the property and changing space to meet new business needs, there are still many more costs to be covered. Financial capital is a key ingredient for new companies, and a lack of funds can have a negative impact on future business success. Investors are one of the most popular means of funding, but they tend to expect parts of the company. Bank loans are another avenue, and tend to provide the best interest rates. The borrower without adequate credit sometimes makes the necessary purchase with a credit card, but high interest rates make this a last resort for an entrepreneur. Loans from family members are another popular option. Some owners borrow to their homes, but this can endanger their personal and family life. The safest measure is to wait until there is enough capital and lower the launch to fit a more limited budget.

Plan to stock inventory of diverse products.

If there is no other vape shop in this area, it is important for stock products for new and experienced users. Not everyone will be interested in building a custom nebulizer, so it’s important to have a simple choice. A wide selection of e-liquids will satisfy the broadest possible audience. Clothes and accessories can also give visitors a reason to spend time browsing through the vape shop selection.

With proper planning, a new company can be a source of personal satisfaction as well as income. Opening a store can be a great way to share your enthusiasm for popping up with the rest of the community. Steps to Starting the First Vape Shop in Your City
